One of the hardest parts about this past year is our desire to return to normalcy, but the truth is, that it has been far from normal. Employees at every restaurant in America have left this industry in search for other careers, leaving owners and managers scrambling to find help before the busy summer season. Every restaurant in our amazing town has dealt with the lack of applicants walking through the doors, but we have all adapted and continue to show up, nonetheless. Whether front of house, or back, restaurant workers are some of the most loyal and hardworking individuals you will ever find.
While it was a struggle, we were lucky enough to gain over 20 new staff members this year. You all have put in so much time and effort, and it feels like you’ve been with us all along. To our younger staff, you are some of the hardest working college and high school kids we have ever witnessed. And to the staff that has been with us all along, our Shack Family, you are the backbone of this restaurant and this business. You have no idea how much you are all appreciated, and we could not have made it through this year without you all.
This summer brought longer than normal wait times, open and unused tables, reduced operating hours, and more overtime than you could even imagine. We have (almost) made it to Labor Day, which usually marks the end of the summer, but the reality of the situation is that we still have months until we see any sort of break in our busy tourist season here in Wells. We have come to the decision to close on Mondays starting August 30th, not only because of a lack of staffing, but mostly for the sanity of our amazing, exhausted staff that have stuck with us all summer long despite the craziness this year has brought.
We could not be prouder to be a part of this industry and this community, and to continue to work beside these resilient and hardworking individuals every day. Thank you for everything.
